Description

Airborne Freeskate vintage Ice Board Wind Surfing Long Boarding skate. Here is the absolute holy grail of ice boarding these 2 near mint condition freeskate longboards from Airborne inc, These 2 boards are absolutely massive standing 6ft tall and over a foot wide and made of a extremely strong high grade fiberglass thats lightweight but yet very flexible & durable! These were purchased back in the mid 80's by my uncle who lives in Jersey from paul mindich himself as they were old friends back in the day. I've always wanted these as a kid, as my uncle would take me out on them almost every time I visited him. Unfortunately he has since passed and these were offered to me by my aunt. I have not had time to use them as im very busy with my work and family and wife says they need to go, so Im hoping some lucky person will get as much enjoyment from them as we did. Now the history I know the blue board was made by paul himself in 1984 and is extremely rare and impossible to find could even be the last one around as ive been searching the web for years and never seen one. The black board you have never seen before and never will again as this was an original prototype so certainly the only one in existence. That board comes with trucks and vintage 80's oj street skate wheels sitting on german bearings the wheels are very rare and collectible and worth about 5 alone. Also included is a set of 4 ice blades to mount once winter rolls around so this board is very collectible but very versatile as well. Both boards are in excellent used condition with no cracks, chips or splits. The 4 blades included with these boards are made of machined hardened steel and are very expensive and cost about 5 each. So each board is sitting on about 0 worth of hardware not including the decks! I believe the trucks are indy 216's which are extremely rare as they are old and very wide. These boards cost around 00 to 00 ea.. new back in the early 80's. I also know even though paul and my uncle were friends that he paid a pretty penny for the pair of these collectible beauty's! Here is a little more history on these for you!!
Mr. Mindnich and his partner, Dave Clapp, also a 24-year-old from Long Branch, have high hopes for the new sport and for their design, the Freeskate. They are confident that the board will thrive as a one-design competitive iceboat, once skiers and board sailors discover its fusion of grace and speed.
Mr. Mindnich and Mr. Clapp run Airborne Inc. in Long Branch, which has been manufacturing Freeskates since October. So far, about 100 have been turned out
At 5.00msrp the Freeskate is not cheap, but it is costs less than even the most modest iceboat. It is also easier to transport and set up than an iceboat.
The Freeskate has been sanctioned by the Eastern Ice Yachting Association as a competitive one-design iceboat.
Mr. Mindnich studied hydrodynamics at the University of Hawaii, and his partner has won New Jersey's triple iceboating crown. (Mr. Clapp's father designed the Skeeter class iceboat, which has been clocked at 130 miles an hour).
''I've taken a couple of speed runs on the Freeskate,'' Mr. Clapp said. ''I've gone about 40 miles an hour. That's fast when you're standing on a little board. If you hit 50, your really smoking!!
''It's got an uncanny ability to simulate funboard sailing,'' Mr. Mindnich said, referring to the new sailboards for the surf. ''It's got an even tighter turning radius.
''You can practice duck jibes (twirling the boom overhead), flare jibes (fanning the boom over the front of the board) and a lot of freestyle stunts as well.''
The board's maneuverability - it has a 15-foot turning radius - lets it be used on small bodies of water. In racing, two marks are set 200 feet apart, square to the wind. Competitors sail in pairs, looping a figure-8 around the marks.
''The board has an extraordinary amount of technology in it,'' Mr. Mindnich said, alluding to the fiberglass/carbon graphite layers whose camber lets the board accelerate as it springs off banked turns.
The blades, he said, are precision- ground by his brother, Dan, and the sails are designed by Henry Bossett, the DN-class iceboat winner.
''Because both skateboard axles are turning in on themselves,'' Mr. Mindnich explained, ''it's like a big old hook-and-ladder fire truck with a guy steering in the back. It can whip around the tightest corners and curves and not lose any speed. There's no skidding.''
Mr. Mindnich is certain that his Freeskates will leave the competition behind when they meet homemade designs at the New England Iceboard Championships scheduled for next weekend at Warden Pond, R.I.
Enough said these 2 boards are just awesome and impossible to find, so act fast as they will not last! This auction is for both boards as i originally listed separately but had about 15 buyers ask if i would combine both. I will ship both in 1 package or you can choose the local pick up option! Thanks for looking and good luck !!
